Tod Benjamin is a timeless storyteller whose words bridge memory and meaning. A retired professional, lifelong traveller, and reflective writer, Tod brings a deep sense of humanity to every story he tells. His works often explore remembrance, identity, and the quiet resilience of the human spirit — themes shaped by his own family’s journey through the turbulence of the 20th century. Born and raised in England, Tod’s early life was touched by the echoes of war and the enduring legacy of his Jewish heritage. Though his career led him across continents and cultures, it was the pursuit of understanding — of history, of family, and of self — that defined his later years. His deeply personal essay “Poland – A Pilgrimage” recounts a journey of both discovery and reconciliation: a return to the land of his ancestors and a confrontation with the memories of a world forever changed. Tod’s writing is reflective and intimate — shaped by curiosity, compassion, and a quiet moral clarity. Whether chronicling travels through Europe or meditating on the power of memory, he invites readers into a shared space of contemplation — where the personal becomes universal, and the past speaks softly to the present. Today, through his collected works, Tod continues to honour the enduring power of story — to remember, to heal, and to connect across generations. Here are a few reflections from those journeys. Having read The Tally Man by Tod Benjamin, I feel as if I know Charlie Stoker personally. This historical novel presents the lives of Charlie Stoker's family as well as many of his friends and acquaintances. The author describes the characters so well that the reader can discern the personality of each one. The biting tone of Margaret's voice, the stutter of Charlie's friend, Bobby, and the sweetness of Sally come alive in this narrative. The Tally Man is the second in the three-part series of the Stoker family by Mr. Benjamin. This book begins in the year 1931 and continues through the year 1941. These years include the besiege of Europe by Hitler and the author writes about the British Parliament's response to Hitler's war. As a reviewer, I did not research the British Parliamentary history to confirm the accuracy of this time period, but the other entries in this book about Britain's Monarchy was in fact correct. Since the author is British and his prose is in the Queen's English, some American readers may have a hard time understanding words not common to American English. However, with just a little common sense and application, readers will not have a problem understanding the text. The book seemed to have been thoroughly edited as I found only a couple of... --- - Published: 2025-10-01 - Modified: 2026-02-17 - URL: https://todbenjamin.com/contact-us/ Contacts Let’s Begin a Conversation Whether you’re a reader moved by Tod’s work, a journalist seeking an interview, or a collaborator with a story to share — Tod Benjamin welcomes thoughtful correspondence. If we were told what lay ahead, Our futures pre-ordained, all said! Must we learn Mandarin and French To qualify as office clerk? Will Greek and Latin us prepare To spend a life in sick folk care? Real life will quickly sort us out When school and college are both past, And stacking shelves up to the sky May seem as high as we can fly. Should we know where we were heading, We’d rush toward that cosy dream, With clear marked roads, firm bright wide routes To where we’ll one day hang our boots. But that’s the point - the raison d’être: We have no special right to know What twists and turns, what highs and lows There are in store along life’s roads. Better we travel, lose our way, Then find a road that we can trust To lead us where it suits us best, Where we can comfortably rest. Where we are heading, so few can know. Lucky ones? Maybe, but I suggest Winners are found among the rest, Who trekk’d blind trails to reach the crest. If we were told what lay ahead, We should have bypassed many thrills. Life’s wine would so diluted be If we should know our destiny. --- - Published: 2025-11-24 - Modified: 2025-12-11 - URL: https://todbenjamin.com/an-arresting-experience/ - Categories: Short Story AN ARRESTING EXPERIENCE   The last thing an ageing, retired English businessman wants on arriving at a foreign airport is aggravation, especially after a journey of about sixteen hours. For some years, in order to avoid a large slice of it, I relied upon the Hertz No. 1 Club Gold service to avoid airport rental desks – and an excellent service it is. On New Year’s Day in 2003, on my way to enjoy my annual snowbird’s vacation, I landed at Orlando, Florida, cleared customs, and gave my reservation number to the Hertz shuttle bus driver, who duly drove me straight to my allocated car. This was a light blue Oldsmobile Alero. Carefully loading my suitcase and golf clubs into the boot and depositing my briefcase and jacket on the passenger seat, I settled down to drive away. I switched on the ignition and saw to my surprise a display informing me that the car needed a service within the next ten days. Since my rental would last not for just a few days but for more than two months, I felt obliged to report the fact to the office. The girl on duty there could not have been more helpful. Of course I must not take that vehicle, she exclaimed, and to compensate for the company’s negligence she would supply a larger model. She issued me with the keys to a cream Mercury Sable. I found the Sable, drove it round to where the Alero was parked and transferred... --- ---
